Hello folks!

Once again, there is an article mentioning Ad-Cane’s accomplishment via Appalachian Trail website – “If These People Can Hike the Appalachian Trail, So Can You”   It can be anywhere from a few months to years to complete the Appalachian Trail only if one is perseverance in pursuing it.  I am going to leave you with Ad-Cane’s quote:

“My goal is to show that dreams can become a reality for anyone, regardless of their personal challenges and struggles. I also want to expose the world to understand why Support Service Person (SSP) is extremely important to deaf and blind community.”  — Roger “Ad-Cane” Poulin

Enjoy rest of the summer, folks in the Northern Hemisphere!

The spring is around the corner, folks in the Southern Hemisphere!  )

Cane and I completed our 8.3 miles of hiking last night, but it was a rough hiking for Cane at last 2 miles.  We began hiking from Caribou Valley Rd with elevation of 2,220 feet.  During the day, we experienced scattered showers which were ok with us while we were climbing Crocker Mountain Range – with elevation of South Peak: 4,040 feet and North Peak: 4,228 feet.  From there, it was gradual and long descent of 5.2 miles to Rt. 27.  It was not ok with Cane….with wet condition on the trail – highly hazardous environment for him since he has difficulty with reading the trail to detect any slippery downward large rocks, scattered wet rocks, leaves covering large rocks, muddy downhill area, and much more lurking hazardous areas waiting for him to slip or/and fall down.  His balance posed a huge challenge for him because once he slips, he more likely to lose control of his balance rather than tries to regain his balance. It was hard for me to watch him falling down each time. I had to ask him from time to time if he was ok and he usually replied, “Ok”, “Pain”, *thumb up*, or “Hold”.

Cane fell down hard twice and despite with his backpack acting as a cushion for his repeated falls, his rump slammed hard on the rock causing him in some great pain.  😦 It continued to be frustrating period for him to deal with. When we arrived at Rt. 27, he became emotional….frustrated, exhausted, exasperated, and relieved. It was hard on him knowing that he cannot do something about his way of hiking on wet condition despite how cautious and hard he tried to be careful. It is like as if once he slips, down he may fall – like AT reminds him each time that he must remain strong to pursue his dream – it takes a true character of one to perserve while dealing with phyiscal, emotional, and mental hardship.

We are discussing our next hiking plans due to several factors….poor weather forecast, shuttle, and etc. Will keep you posted.

Roger and I arrived in Atlanta this morning and took the MARTA to North Spring to meet up Roni’s dear friend/sister, Elisa, whom she hadn’t seen each other since 1995 for a lunch. It was wonderful lunch to catch up with each other’s news and for Roger to share his envision of AT. After lunch, the Hiker Hostel picked Roger and me up and headed for Dahlonega. Such a gorgeous hostel in beginning of Appalachia Mountains range. We re-evaluated our backpacks to remove any unnecessary items to mail them home. Now, it is less than 12 hours before we take the first footstep on AT for 5 millions footsteps (I saw a really tall hiker named “Skywalker” which I discovered his book on the end table at hostel.  I picked it up and saw his quote about first step toward 5 millions footsteps….so I decided to borrow his quote since I liked it so much!!!!  Here is his website: http://www.skywalkerat.com/  I repeat – he was realllllly TALLLLL!!!!). It gives me a goosebumps to even ponder about that. Of course, I am nervous in some ways, but with touch of optimistic vibes and support from my friends, loved ones and family…it just tides me over to begin my journey with Roger to help him pursuing his dream at last. Wow…..

Folks, I may not able to send updates for a while until we arrive in town with electricity and Internet. Wish us well on our way – follow the white blaze trail! 🙂
